Education

As one of the national autonomous regions of China, Inner Mongolia has her own special feature in education. In many schools, Mongolian is used as official language as well as modern Chinese. The region also has a lot muslin schools and schools of nationalities, ensuring equal opportunity of education in all nationalities.

Inner Mongolia University

Inner Mongolia University is located in Hohhot, the capital city of Inner Mongolia. It was founded in 1957, and is the earliest comprehensive university ever established in the ethnic regions of China. It was confirmed as a national key comprehensive university by the Ministry of Education of China in 1978 and became one of 100 universities of the “211 Project” universities for key construction and development in 1997. It also became the university to be jointly constructed by the Ministry of Education of China and the People’s Government of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in 2004. The first President of the University was Mr. Wulanfu, the Vice Premier of the State Council and ex-Chairman of the People’s Government of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The current President is Prof. Chen Guoqing.

Inner Mongolia University’s academic system is wide-ranging and it covers 10 disciplines such as philosophy, economics, law, literature, history, sciences, engineering, agriculture, management and art theory. Two of the state-level key disciplines, Chinese Ethnic Language & Literature and zoology with their distinctive local and ethnic characteristics enjoy high prestige at home and abroad. Now the University consists of 23 colleges with 51 departments and one independent department for general education.

The University has 2,907 teachers and staff. The full-time teachers and researchers are 1,732 including 125 doctorate supervisors, 280 professors and 436 associate professors. The University boasts 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 5 double-employed academicians, 78 Special Government Allowance winners, 5 candidates of “Hundred-thousand-ten thousands Expert Project”, and 9 candidates of the “New Century Supporting Program for Outstanding Personnel of the Ministry of Education of China”.

Attaching great importance to international academic exchange and cooperation, Inner Mongolia University has been actively enhancing its exchanges and cooperation with international universities and research institutes and it has officially signed agreements of inter-collegiate exchange and cooperation with more than 63 foreign universities. In 2011, more than 500 foreign scholars came to Inner Mongolia University for academic exchanges, 160 teachers were sent abroad to pursue advanced studies, to give lectures, to attend international academic conferences and to conduct cooperative researches. And Inner Mongolia University has enrolled more than 3,000 foreign students from 28 countries since 1999.

Inner Mongolia Normal University

Founded in 1952, Inner Mongolia Normal University is one of the oldest universities established in the frontier minority area by the CPC and its government. As a key university established in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Inner Mongolia Normal University is an important base to train teachers for primary education, ethnic minority education, and to train compound talents who speak both Mongolian and Chinese. It also serves as a training center for secondary school teachers, a continuing education center for primary and secondary school teachers, and a research center for the development and reform of basic education and minority education. IMNU thus deserves the honor of being regarded as “the cradle of minority education”.

IMNU presently has two campuses with a total area of over 2,530,000 square meters, and the university boasts 900,000 square meters floor areas dedicated to educational buildings. The school library houses over 2,400,000 books. At present, the University has 2,400 staff members, including 1,500 full-time teachers and researchers, among whom 28 are doctoral supervisors, 548 master supervisors. There are more than 30,000 full-time undergraduates and junior college students, over 4,200 postgraduates, more than 5,800 students with adult higher education and over 400 foreign students.

Inner Mongolia Normal University presently comprises 34 subordinate colleges and offers 64 undergraduate majors. It possesses 1 National Quality Course, 2 National Teaching Teams and 6 Specialty Programs approved by Education Ministry. IMNU also boasts 2 First- Level PhD programs, 4 Second-Level PhD programs, 24 First-Level Master Programs, 112 Second-Level Master Programs and 8 Professional Master Programs. Moreover, there are 5 regional key laboratories, 2 regional key laboratories in university as well as 12 fundamental laboratories and laboratories with professional features jointly constructed by the Central Government and local universities. By adhering to the idea of running school openly and enhancing international exchanges, IMNU has established favorable cooperation and exchange relations with many foreign countries and some renowned universities, colleges, research institutions in China .

Inner Mongolia University of Technology

Located in Hohhot city of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Inner Mongolia University of Technology grew out of the former Suiyuan Higher Technical School. In 1958, with the support from Tsinghua University, Inner Mongolia Engineering College was founded, which was under the direct administration of the Ministry of Mechanical Industry and the Ministry of Agricultural Machinery. Since 1983, the college has been subordinate to Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. In 1993, the college was upgraded into Inner Mongolia University of Technology. Occupying an area of 3,178 Mu (212 hectares), the university consists of three campuses: Xincheng Campus, Jinchuan Campus and Junggar Campus.

2,076 employees are working in the university, including 1,430 professional faculties. Among all the faculties, there are 150 professors, 475 associate professors, 35 PhD student tutors, and 430 postgraduate student tutors. 74% of them have acquired PhD degree or master degrees. Amongall the faculites, more than 60 have been awarded the honor of “Outstanding Young and Middle-aged Experts” or have been specially granted bythe State Council; 3 won the prize of “Inner Mongolia Excellent Talent”; 7 became the candidates of “The Project of Excellent Talents of the New Century” launched by the State Education Ministry, 11 became the candidates of “Inner Mongolia Talents”, 46 became the candidates of the “State Talent Project” and “321 Talent Project of Inner Mongolia”. A number of experts from China Academy of Engineering and other scholars and scientists have been employed as either guest professors or tutors of the university.

At present, the university has 5 featured disciplines authorized by the State Education Ministry, 9 key disciplines of Inner Mongolia, 4 major disciplines of cultivation of Inner Mongolia, 2 university key disciplines and 19 famous brand majors of Inner Mongolia, and 7 teaching demonstrative centers of Inner Mongolia are being constructed. The Laboratory of the Wind Power and Solar Power Application was listed as a key laboratory jointly supported by the State Education Ministry and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Since the “11th Five year Plan”, 1,572 research projects of the National Natural Science Foundation, the National Social Science Foundation, and the National High Technology Research and Development Program(“863”Program) of China have been carried out. Over 49 awards at the provincial level and the state level have been given to the university, and more than 81 patents have been granted and 987 articles have been retrieved by SCI, EI, ISTP and CSSCI.

The university has played an active role in the international exchange activities. The long term cooperative and friendly relation has been established with more than 10 famous universities, such as Purdue University, Meiji University, and University of Quebec. In 2007,the university became an authorized organization for carry out the “Chinese Government Scholarship Program” for overseas students.
